Exhausted but really happy!

Happy Halloween!!! The children are still excitedly rushing to the door with their bowls of sweets and i'm taking the opportunity to catch up with some admin :).

It's been a crazy few months and I have been reminded several times to update the blog but I have only just got around to it.

The business is going so well! I have had very little time for anything else and at times I have felt a bit burnt out but then I hear it is always tough when you go it alone. I am sure everyone who has made this leap has underestimated how much you need to eat, sleep and breath your business to get it established and I certainly never imagined it would take off as quickly as it has!

I have had some wonderful orders and have immensely enjoyed creating some really special cakes. My diary is filling so quickly and I am taking orders for next summer already.

My mum has been unwell recently and this has of course taken priority over everything else. There has been a fair amount of juggling and working through the night. Its a good job I am accustomed to night shifts from my previous career!

There are some exciting things ahead and I am especially looking forward to attending the international cake show this week. I know that I will want to buy everything I see! I am working on some designs for Christmas including both traditional and contemporary elements. I will also be putting on sale small christmas hampers which will include cakes, macarons and hot chocolate spoons. They will make perfect gifts for teachers and loved ones :)

I have been so overwhelmed with my repeat orders from  customers that I am starting a loyalty scheme which will include a free cake up to the value of £50 when 4 cakes are ordered withn 12 months. The loyalty cards will be available soon and I will be backfilling them for my most loyal customers!

Just to make you aware, I can now print any image on to icing so if you would like me to make a cake with your photo on or you would like to make your own cake, I can provide the printed image for you! Just message me for more information :).

Lastly I just want to say a HUGE thank you for all the support I have had over the last few months. I am so grateful for every order I take and I look forward to makng many more cakes in 2018!

Our Blog

An ongoing series of informational entries

It's been a while since my last update and that is mainly because I have been rushed off my feet! Not only with cakes but with various other things throughout June.

It started with a trip to London to see Depeche Mode which was EPIC! I took my eldest daughter with me and my husband. When leaving the Olympic Stadium we discovered that a terror attack had taken place a few miles from where we were. Luckily we were all ok but the tragic events over the last few months have really made me look at life a bit differently and I am certainly not taking our safety for granted.

My eldest daughter turned 17...17!!!! I know....I don't look old enough ;P :D. She is now driving and looking at Universities so I am feeling VERY old :D.

I have received so many fantastic orders over the last few months and have added some photo's below so please have a look :). I am enjoying this more than I have ever enjoyed doing anything. The reward of seeing someones face light up when they see their cake is worth all the long hours and hard work although, when the temperature in my kitchen peaked at 34 degrees last week I had to admit defeat and work through the night when it was a bit cooler. Icing, buttercream and heat do not make a good combination!!

Well i'm off to do some paperwork and finalise some cake orders for next month. No rest for the wicked!!

First Blog Entry!

Well, Happy Easter weekend to all! I hope its been a good one. I was really busy with some fantastic Easter orders on Friday and Saturday but was able to relax on Sunday and enjoy some lovely family time (and chocolate).

I've never written a blog before so bear with me!

To start off I just wanted to say thank you to all who have supported this venture so far. I really appreciate all the positive messages and comments I have received since starting Emily's Cakes as a 'proper' business! Its exciting, exhausting, wonderful and terrifying all at once starting a new business but i'm learning a lot as I go...hence the blog!

For those that don't know me my name is Emily and I am wife to Steve, mum to three beautiful daughters and a mental health nurse by training. My youngest daughter is 9 and has Spina bifida and hydrocephalus. Her daily needs have increased with her age and it has made it impossible for both me and my husband to work so after much deliberation Steve and I have totally swapped our roles and he now works full time and I have started what was a hobby into a business which I can do from home around the girls which makes life better for us all.

I'm going to use this space to keep people updated about new designs, events and generally talk through what I am doing so watch this space!

I'll leave it there for now....Cheerio :)

It's Been a Busy Week.....

I love a bank holiday weekend, who doesn't? Two in a row however has just left me confused and I honestly have no idea what day of the week it is. The poor children keep correcting me but I think they are now just as confused as me!

I've had a busy week here. We are making some changes to our kitchen in order to make more storage space for my ever increasing baking equipment which is great but a complete headache when I am trying to create masterpieces :).

I have made some lovely orders this week including an 'In the Night Garden' cake for lovely little Theo's 2nd Birthday and some babyshower cupcakes for the soon to arrive baby Harvey. I also had a stall at the local makers market which has recently started at our local museum in Gloucester. It was great fun and I met some really lovely people and sold lots of cakes to the people of Gloucester. I even had a lady come back for more!

I am very excited about an order that has come in this week for a 1980's themed birthday cake. I can't wait to design and make it. I think this is one of the best things about this job. I get really excited about what I am

going to make and the whole design process is so rewarding.

I'm making the 'STAR PRIZE' for a local nursery raffle this week which will be fun. I'm going to make something really luxurious and eyecatching and obviously...very tasty!

17/04/2017  - New Business card design!

I have designed a new business card and flyer today so the plan is to start advertising around Gloucester. If anyone knows of any good places to stick a flyer please let me know!
